Nothing here is proprietary and nothing is behind a form. The whole study is 2,844 rows of who played where and when. Download it, open it in a spreadsheet, and check the arithmetic yourself. If a figure on this site is wrong, this is where you will find it.

Three files that contain everything

If you only take one thing, take the first one. Every chart, every percentage and every leaderboard on this site is derived from it.

FileTypeSizeWhat it is
all-appearances.csvCSV246 KBThe master file. One row per artist per edition, across every counted series. Berks and Rehoboth are published as their own analysis files rather than in this CSV — see the note below.
2,844 rows · columns: event, location, year, artist, booking_desk, series_type. Open it in Excel and you can rebuild every number in the counted series.
artist-leaderboard.csvCSV18 KBEvery artist ranked by total slots.
687 artists · columns: rank, artist, slots, event_series, booking_desk.
agent-rosters.csvCSV4 KBWho represents whom, flattened.
One row per artist per desk, with that artist’s total slot count. Artists on two rosters appear twice, by design.
The master CSV has six columns: event, location, year, artist, booking_desk, series_type. A pivot table on artist reproduces the leaderboard. A pivot on booking_desk reproduces The Gatekeepers.

The control

Published separately, and on purpose

Two counts, two scopes — read this first

This study holds two separate datasets, and a number from one cannot be checked against the other. Both are downloadable and both are listed below.

1. The series file — all-appearances.csv. Eighteen event series counted edition by edition, one row per artist per edition, 1987–2027. This is the file behind the volume pages, the Gatekeepers table and every bucket percentage (promoter-run festivals 42.5%, promoter-run concert series 28.7%, artist-run 22.1%; across the whole file, 35.8%).

2. The artist-total file — ten-largest-appearances.csv. Ten smooth jazz events selected for this study — Berks, Seabreeze, Catalina JazzTrax, Capital Jazz, Newport Beach, Long Beach, the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, the Smooth Jazz Cruise, the Dave Koz Cruise and the Thornton Winery series — counted per artist, 2006–2026 (Berks across its full history from 1991). This is the file behind Ten Facts and the front-page headline numbers: Rick Braun 103 bookings, Peter White 100, Gerald Veasley on 29 of 35 Berks editions.

Only two events appear in both — Catalina JazzTrax and Newport Beach. The rest do not overlap, so the two files must never be added together, and a figure quoted from one should name which one it came from. Merging them is the single largest open job in this study.

What is not in the master CSV, and why

Berks and Rehoboth. Both volumes were counted before this file existed and are published as their own analysis files — Berks — appearance counts and rotation and Rehoboth — appearance counts and rotation, both downloadable below. Two front-page figures come from them: Rick Braun on 28 of 35 Berks bills, and 84.5% of Rehoboth slots over ten editions going to a returning artist. Those two numbers are auditable from those files, not from the master CSV. Merging them would add well over a thousand slots and move every bucket percentage on this site, so it is a decision to be taken deliberately rather than quietly.

An unresolved conflict, stated plainly

The Florida Smooth Jazz Weekend. This file carries 133 rows for a Florida Smooth Jazz Weekend attributed to the Florida Smooth Jazz Foundation, whose first edition is recorded as January 2015 at the Crowne Plaza Melbourne Oceanfront. BMG Concerts’ own published archive lists Florida Smooth Jazz Weekends in the same city and the same hotel from 2014. Whether these are one event under two producers, a co-promotion or a handover is unresolved, and no published document settles it. Under the rule that conflicts are reported rather than resolved, every Florida Smooth Jazz Weekend, Festival and Cruise entry is excluded from the BMG volume’s counts so that no slot is counted twice anywhere here. Resolving it would add slots to this study, not remove them.

Jazz at the Oxford is held in its own file rather than the master CSV. Folding 114 rows into it would move every headline figure on every other page — the four-desk share, the leaderboard, the artist count. Keeping it separate means the numbers you check against the other volumes are the numbers those volumes were written from. It uses the identical schema, so concatenating the two files is one line if you want the combined view.

FileTypeSizeWhat it is
ten-largest-appearances.csvCSV10 KBThe artist-total file. Ten smooth jazz events selected for this study, counted per artist — the dataset behind Ten Facts and the front-page numbers.
233 rows · 27 artists · 10 events · 1,422 appearances. Columns: artist, event, appearances, artist_total_across_ten. Does not overlap the master file except at Catalina and Newport Beach.
oxford-appearances.csvCSV5 KBJazz at the Oxford. Same five columns as the master file, so it concatenates straight onto it.
114 rows · 14 counted seasons, 89 distinct artists. Booked by the commissioning promoter since the 2015–16 season — see the volume itself.
oxford-lineups-2010-2027.txtTXT6 KBThe Oxford’s raw lineup file
Carries the @PARTIAL 2012-13 season, the @NOTHELD pandemic years, the producer eras, and every judgement call made in counting it.
oxford-tally.jsonJSON6 KBThe Oxford’s computed tally
Repeat rate, desk share on the four-desk and all-desk bases, era split, full artist counts.

Combined, the study holds 2,958 appearances across 19 series. Every figure quoted elsewhere on this site uses the 2,844-row master file unless it explicitly says otherwise.

Raw lineups

The source files, one per event

Plain text, human-readable, and heavily commented. Every line carries the source it came from, and every gap is marked as a gap rather than filled in. The comment blocks are often more useful than the data — they hold the price series, the corporate records, the conflicts and the things that could not be verified.

How to read it

The file format. Lineup files are one line per edition: YEAR | Artist; Artist; Artist. Lines beginning # are commentary and sources. Lines beginning @ open a section — and everything from the first section header onward is excluded from the counts. That is how partial and cancelled editions are kept on the record without contaminating the arithmetic.

The counting rule. One appearance is one artist on one edition’s bill. Package and supergroup billings are opened into the individuals named in them. Standing groups count as one. Hosts and DJs who do not play a set are excluded. An artist billed twice in a single edition counts once. Unrecovered editions are omitted entirely and never estimated, so every figure in this study is a floor, not an estimate.

On representation. An artist is attributed to a booking desk only where the agency’s own roster page, or the artist’s own booking page, says so. It is never inferred from the fact that two artists shared a stage. Where two desks claim the same artist, both are recorded and the conflict is reported rather than resolved — which is why desk percentages overlap and must never be added together. 1,597 of 2,844 slots (56.2%) trace to no publicly named desk at all.
