Smooth Jazz News is a print magazine covering the format, published since 2000 (No. 190, Dec 2019, marked its twentieth anniversary). This volume reads 112 of its covers — March 2008 to the current Oct/Nov/Dec 2026 issue (No. 221) — one at a time, records who is on the front, and sets each cover artist against the festival data and roster map used everywhere else on this site.
Every artist with two or more lead covers. Orange bars are artists on one of the four booking desks mapped in The Gatekeepers (Reliant Talent, Chapman & Co., Mighty Music, Major Scale), from those agencies’ 2026 published rosters. Black bars are artists who are not on those rosters.
One lead cover each (28): Adam Hawley, Basia, Charlie Wilson, Chuck Loeb, David Benoit, Fourplay, George Duke, Incognito, JJ Sansaverino, Javier Colon, Jeff Golub, Jeff Lorber, Jeffrey Osborne, Jill Scott, Kenny G, Lindsey Webster, Marcus Anderson, Marcus Miller, Maze ft. Frankie Beverly, Michael Franks, Michael McDonald, Michael Paulo, Najee, Paul Taylor, Phil Perry, Ray Parker Jr., Rebecca Jade, Tom Braxton.
Repeat cover artists against the festival record. “Slots” and “Series” are counted from all-appearances.csv, the master file behind every festival volume. 103 of 107 cover credits (96%) went to an artist who also holds at least one festival slot in this study; since 2018 the figure is 40 of 40.

The roster map is a 2026 snapshot. Applied to a 2008 cover it records who represents that artist today, not who did at the time. The 2008–2017 sample is also incomplete (see Method). Both figures are reported as measured, with those limits stated.
Two issues each year are built around a fixed occasion: the December/January holiday issue, and the October issue, which in most years carries the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival guide. Every lead cover in both runs is listed below.

Download: smooth-jazz-news-covers.csv — one row per issue, five columns.
Each cover image was read directly from the publisher’s own archive page (smoothjazznews.com/archive) and its Issuu library (issuu.com/smoothjazznews), retrieved 1 October 2026. A lead cover is the artist whose photograph and name dominate the front. Where two artists share the front equally, each is credited, so cover credits (107) exceed artist-led issues (102). Small inset photographs and multi-artist tribute or collage covers are recorded as “pictured” and are not counted in the ranking.
Coverage. February 2018 (No. 177) to October 2026 (No. 221) is complete: 45 of 45 issues. 2008–2017 is partial: 67 covers are published in the archive; roughly 30 others from that span are not. Covers before 2008 are not posted by the publisher and the magazine’s former per-issue archive pages now return 404, so 1999–2007 is not counted. Cover lines (text-only mentions) are not counted. Desk attribution uses the same rule as the rest of the study: an agency’s own roster page, or the artist’s own booking page.
